William Buick is one of the most gifted jockeys to ever grace a racecourse, and his status among the greats was further cemented when he rode his 2,000th British winner during a treble on the opening day of the July Festival at Newmarket.
It was fitting that the milestone came at his beloved headquarters, where so many of his career highs have played out.
For punters who follow the sport closely—particularly those keeping tabs on Buick’s mounts for potential free bets UK—his consistency and big-race temperament make him a jockey to trust.
Buick, who claimed his first winner in 2006 for Andrew Balding at just 18, has since become one of the most recognisable names in the weighing room.
Now 36 and showing no signs of slowing down, the Norwegian-born rider is already eyeing up the next thousand after taking his tally to 2,002 on the same day.
His partnership with John Gosden brought early Group 1 glory, and his current role as retained rider for Godolphin has seen him amass more than 60 victories at the highest level.
Picking out just a handful of standout wins is no easy feat, but here are five races that define Buick’s brilliance in the saddle.
The oldest of the British Classics has been a happy hunting ground for Buick, who has won it three times. His first came in 2010 aboard the 12/1 outsider Arctic Cosmos for John Gosden.
It was a coming-of-age ride, with Buick producing the colt to lead inside the final furlong before pulling away to beat Aidan O'Brien's Midas Touch by nearly two lengths.
It was a breakthrough Classic success that marked Buick as a rising star. He repeated the feat a year later on Masked Marvel and completed the hat-trick with Hurricane Lane for Godolphin in 2021.
Every top jockey dreams of winning the Derby, and Buick achieved that goal in 2018 when guiding Masar to glory at Epsom.
A 16/1 shot after finishing third in the 2000 Guineas, Masar travelled sweetly throughout and stormed home to hand Buick his first Derby—and Godolphin their very first in the iconic race.
It was a landmark day for trainer Charlie Appleby too, and the win kickstarted a period of dominance for the Buick–Appleby–Godolphin triumvirate on the global stage.
Buick’s 2000 Guineas story is one of patience. In 2022, he infamously picked Native Trail over Coroebus, who won under James Doyle.
But redemption came in 2024 aboard Notable Speech, an unbeaten all-weather runner making his turf debut.
Sent off at 16/1, the Dubawi colt silenced the doubters with a smooth success over Rosallion, giving Buick his long-awaited win in the colts' Classic.
Just a day after doubling up in the 2000 Guineas with Ruling Court, Buick finally added the 1000 Guineas to his CV aboard Desert Flower.
The Night Of Thunder filly had been a dominant force going into the race and justified favouritism with ease, never looking in trouble under Buick’s ice-cool ride.
The victory completed a memorable Classic double and showcased Buick’s ability to deliver when it matters most.
Royal Ascot has been the stage for many Buick successes, but the Gold Cup had long eluded him—until this year.
Riding Trawlerman for John and Thady Gosden, Buick made every yard of the running in the two-and-a-half-mile showpiece.
The Godolphin stayer kicked clear turning for home and never looked back, storming to a seven-length win over Illinois in one of the most dominant Gold Cup displays in recent memory.
